Advanced Equine Health Care and Management
 

“Advanced Equine Health Care and Management” is taught by Michael M. Fugaro, VMD, dACVS, a veterinarian and associate professor of equine studies at Centenary College and an adjunct professor at Rutgers. This course is offered at Rutgers in alternate years. The next offering will be spring semester 2012.

What will be covered?

This course will present in-depth information on the diseases and common emergency disorders of the horse. It will utilize basic concepts of anatomy and physiology, apply them to clinical situations that might arise in horses, and teach students how to effectively manage many of these health-related situations. A limited number of seats in the program are being made available to continuing education (non-matriculated) students.

Students will learn about “normal” thresholds, as well as problems associated with the major physical systems of the horse. Three exams and a group oral presentation will be part of the required course work.

Who should attend?

The course is recommended for equine enthusiasts with a medical interest, managers/ owners of equine facilities, and students interested in medical science.

In order to enroll, students must have at least a high school diploma; it is recommended, but not required, that attendees have completed “Horse Management”, taught by Sarah Ralston, VMD, Ph.D., dACVN (offered each fall semester). If you register as a continuing education student you will receive 3.6 continuing education units, rather then undergraduate college credits.

Required Texts

The Complete Equine Veterinary Manual (2nd ed)., Pavord, T and Pavord M., 2005, David Charles. An additional required text on Equine First Aid will be announced during the semester. Students may purchase the texts independently or purchase them at the Rutgers University Bookstore.

How to Register

If you register as a Continuing Professional Education student (CPE) you will receive 3.6 continuing education units and a certificate in lieu of undergraduate college credits.

Lifetime Learning Tax Credit

Now you can qualify for a new educational tax credit for tuition and fees paid for undergraduate, graduate and continuing education courses. Each family may claim a tax credit equal to 20 percent of the first $5,000 of educational expenses (for a maximum credit of $1,000) on its federal income tax. Eligible education expenses are offset by grants, scholarships, and employer-provided educational assistance. This tax credit is subject to income and other limitations. Cancellations

Registrants may withdraw from the course with a full refund minus a $75 processing fee provided our office is notified at least five business days prior to the start of the course. Beyond that time, registrants may be responsible for the full registration fee if they register but do not attend. Substitutions are permitted.
