TIFFANY MOREY AWARDED ERNEST C. BELL SCHOLARSHIP FOR 2009

New Brunswick, N.J. (January. 28, 2009)  – Tiffany Morey, a senior at Rutgers’ School of Environmental and Biological Sciences (SEBS), is the recipient of the Ernest C. Bell Scholarship for 2009. The award was presented by Dr. Carey Williams, Extension Specialist in Equine Science at the Rutgers Equine Science Center, at the Annual Breeders Awards dinner hosted by the New Jersey Department of Agriculture.

The Ernest C. Bell Memorial Scholarship Fund was established to perpetuate Mr. Bell’s memory and his ideals of courage and determination. The scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior at SEBS who is majoring in Animal Science with an emphasis in Equine Science. The recipient must be a New Jersey resident and demonstrate a high level of scholastic achievement, involvement with New Jersey’s horse industry, and financial need.

Mr. Bell, a founding member of the New Jersey Equine Advisory Board, had severe physical disabilities due to childhood poliomyelitis. Although he was unable to walk, he drove and taught horses. He bred Percherons and Shetlands and taught children to not only ride, but to understand their horses. One former student wrote, “He was the most able disabled man I’ve ever known.”

A recipient of the Doris C. Murphy Endowed Scholarship in Equine Science in 2007, 2008 and 2009, Ms. Morey is pursuing a degree in Animal Science with the Pre-Veterinary Studies option and minors in Equine Science, Biology, and Science Teacher Education. In 2010 she will graduate from the Rutgers University Graduate School of Education’s Five Year Teacher Education Program in the Agricultural Education track. Future plans include pursuing a career as an agricultural education teacher, working with local 4-H and Cooperative Extension, and rehabilitation and fostering of off-the-track Thoroughbreds.
