Rutgers Equine Science Center offered expert testimony to the Commission

New Brunswick, N.J. – On Wednesday, September 9, 2009, The Rutgers Equine Science Center hosted the Governor's Commission on the Horse Racing Industry. The meeting was held from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm in the G.H. Cook Campus Center.

The meeting began promptly with a call to order by commission Chair Robert Bildner. The agenda for the day included two presentations: an Equine Industry Update from Dr. Karyn Malinowski, director of the Equine Science Center at Rutgers University; and a presentation by commission member Dennis Robinson, president and CEO of the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority.

Malinowski presented results from the Equine Science Center’s 2007 New Jersey equine industry economic impact study and highlights from the recent report, Impact of Slot Machines/Video Lottery Terminals on the Economy, Horse Racing and Breeding Industry, Agriculture and Open Space in States/Provinces where they Exist: Why is this important for New Jersey, published by the Hall Institute of Public Policy. Mr. Robinson’s presented an overview of statistical data on the Casino Gaming Interests in the Northeast, specifically looking at New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Connecticut.

Presentations by Dr. Malinowski and Mr. Robinson were followed by a series of questions and spirited discussion from commission members.

Before the meeting concluded, Chair Bildner opened the floor for questions and comments from the public. Chair Bildner then announced the date for the next meeting and the meeting adjourned.
